Exploring the White Mountains of New Hampshire is a great way to breathe the fresh air and take in the beautiful scenery. You can go canoeing or kayaking to make it more fun and challenging. Lease a canoe or kayak if you don’t own one. They are an inexpensive way to get out in nature and enjoy your environment. You can stop along the river banks and take a break for lunch or dinner. Pack a picnic basket that includes your favorite foods. Don’t forget to bring fresh water on your river trip. Consider taking canoeing or kayaking lessons before you venture out in the White Mountains.

You can also hire a tour guide to show you the mountains. Make sure you check the weather report before heading out on your trip. Bad weather can suddenly appear in the mountains without warning. Pack enough gear to plan for the unexpected. You may want to consider taking a survival course before you book your trip. Survival techniques will help you survive in extreme weather conditions. You should be in good physical condition before you lease a canoe or kayak. It takes a lot of work to navigate through roaring water rapids.

New Hampshire is a peaceful state, where many go to relax. A vacation here can be perfect and a great way to commune with nature. The White Mountains, are a picturesque location, which has a little bit of something for everyone. Mount Washington, is part of the White Mountains and the tallest mountain in the Northeaster US at 6,288 feet.

Four-thousand footers, is a group of 48 peaks that are over 40 feet. Hiking and mountain biking are top activities here. The Appalachian Mountain Club, is a group of hikers who routinely hike together. The Old Man of the Mountain, is a popular destination, which tourists like to visit. It is a rock formation, which resembles a mans face. “The Basin”,also known as a large granite bowl also inspires tourists. It has a beautiful waterfall which dumps into the Pemigewasset River.

Even stars and famous writers have been drawn to the mountains. Perhaps this is why Nathaniel Hawthorne used these mountains, as the backdrop for his novel, “The Great Carbuncle”. There are plenty of different styles of lodging in this area, including cabins in the woods. When looking for a great place to spend your next vacation, bring the family to a place where the peace and quiet, can refresh and relax.

People looking for a glimpse of nature at its best will not be disappointed when they visit New Hampshire’s beautiful White Mountains. Conveniently located near Boston and New York City, these rugged mountains that form part of the Appalachian range are considered some of the region’s finest for hiking as they include a series of alpine huts which are available to hikers. Historically, these mountains have been a major draw for artists to paint and draw the inspiring scenery.

Main attractions are Flume gorge and a granite bowl 20 feet in diameter nicknamed ‘the basin’ which is waterfall fed and thus beautifully smooth. Swimming is also popular in the area’s mountain spring ice cold water. Prior to 2003, a formation called the Old Man of the Mountain which when seen from a particular angle was likened to the lines of a wizened man’s face stood here. Unfortunately it collapsed and is now unrecognizable but an ‘Old Man of the Mountain’ museum now stands in its place.

Visitors can enjoy the area’s views via the spectacular aerial tramways and cable cars that whisk you up to the summit for a vista beyond compare. On a clear day Maine and even Canada can be seen from this vantage point. There also a number of scenic railways to experience the landscape from.

Sunset Hill House: The most notable and acclaimed restaurant in the region, the Sunset Hill House has a lot of awards and a view to match. If you’re looking for true haute cuisine and a truly to die for wine list, head here.
Woodstock Inn Station and Brewery: If you want a little history lesson with your better-than-average bar food, head to the Woodstock Inn. The walls are covered with old photos from the event and there are people here still telling the tales, all you have to do is ask.
Bellini’s: You don’t automatically think of Italian food when you think of New Hampshire but Bellini’s family style dining system is quite a treat. It’s northern Italian fare at a casual price with a casual ambiance to match; great for families.

The mountains are home to several family friendly attractions. You can visit theme parks, tour waterfalls, river gorges and caves or get a bird’s eye view of the mountains as you ride tramways and zip lines. With its many rivers, the White Mountains offer numerous opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. In winter, the mountains are perfect for a quick getaway or an extended ski vacation. In spring, explore the countryside by hiking, biking or on horseback. In summer, take a ride on the cog railway to the summit of Mt Washington. Visit the observatory museum and marvel at views from New England’s highest peak. In autumn, stay in a bed and breakfast and drive the Kancamagus Highway as it winds its way through the White Mountain National Forest as summer green is transformed into the dazzling colors of autumn.

Accommodations range from no frills camping to luxury hotels. There is something for every craving and budget. The same is true for dining.

Between the scenic railroads, the mountain tramways, the water parks, or the caves and waterfalls, you’ll have a hard time deciding how to spend your time in the White Mountains.
